Prospective gay dads, Adam Neald and Martin Cassidy have today abandoned their plans to have a child with the assistance of the surrogacy and screening company, Proteus.
Adam and his partner Martin, who were to become the first British couple to use the Proteus Omega package to “choose” their child, have abandoned their plans after it emerged that Adam had asked for screening for homosexuality to be carried out. This would have enabled the couple to pick an embryo that would be born without a predilection for homosexual behaviour. However, his partner Martin was unaware of the additional screening and only realized his partner's deception after Adam's mother telephoned Martin to inform him.
“I just can’t believe it,” Martin told us, “I had no idea. I wasn’t sure about this screening from the start-I don’t really think it is right to “pick” a child in this way. Adam thought it would be the best thing for the child, though, and I trusted him, so I agreed. I just can’t believe he has deceived me like this.”
Daniel Greenwood, Head of Proteus’ UK clinic said, “The Neald file is on hold. Adam and Martin are to contact us if they wish to reconsider their decision.”
Adam Neald was today unavailable for comment.
