My name is Dr. Ryan Kaye.
I'm a geneticist and I have a 15 year old son called Mark. When I was 14 I found
out that I am a carrier for Friedreich's ataxia which my sister Annie inherited
from our parents. She later died from the disorder. When she was alive, she
made me promise that I would do the very best that I could for my children.
That's all I think I have done. When I found out that Jennifer my wife was a
carrier too, I knew I had to screen out the rogue gene that killed my sister
to make sure my son didn't suffer too. My sister's illness was terrible and
I couldn't bear to see my son go through that pain. I had to beat it for the
sake of my family and for my son. Yes, I know I went further than Jen and I
agreed, but all I wanted to do was to give my son the very best chance I could.
I had to pick one embryo, so I made sure that I picked the best. I don't feel
that I have done anything wrong.
